On Saturday, September 10, 2011, progressives all over Orange County and some from LA County gathered at the Delhi Community Center in Santa Ana for the 2nd annual Orange County Progressive Summit. It started out as a rainy morning, but participants were flexible to the changing accommodations and it did not stop us from putting on an engaging event with interesting workshops, informative exhibitors, and fantastic speakers.
Christine Chavez opened with some inspiring words based on her work involving labor rights and civil rights. Having been born and raised in a conservative county in California, she related her experience to our progressive fight in Orange County. Jim Hightower closed with a motivating speech to encourage us to continue what we are doing to strengthen the progressive movement in Orange County. Along with his usual funny and witty commentary, he reminded us to “put the ‘progress’ back in progressive!”
